“Cash Cab” Returns To Discovery Channel This Year

The network announced its decision to revive the hit cable game show, which originally ran for 10 seasons from 2005-2012, a couple hours ago. Comedian David Steinberg will executive produce the new season and Lion USA with Norton Productions will return to produce the show. The ambush-style game show has a cab pick up unexpected passengers and engage them in a general knowledge trivia game where they could earn hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars in cash for correct answers or risk being kicked to the curb with nothing. The new season debuts later this year and features celebrities joining in on the fun of driving the Cash Cab and picking up passengers. Although stand-up comedian Ben Bailey originally hosted the series – and won three Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Game Show Host in the process – no permanent host has been named yet for the revived series.

Named as one of the 60 greatest game shows ever by TV Guide in 2013, Cash Cab has seen much success since its arrival in the US in 2005 – six months after the show had premiered in the UK on ITV. In addition to Bailey’s three Emmy wins in 2010, 2011 and 2013; the show won Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Game Show for three consecutive years from 2008-2010. Cash Cab  has been picked up in syndication and on GSN as of two weeks ago. Three spin-offs aired while the original version was still running strong: Cash Cab After Dark 2007, which was played for higher stakes and with tougher questions; Cash Cab Las Vegas in 2010, which featured more celebrities playing for charity; and Cash Cab Chicago in 2011, hosted by comedian Beth Melewski.
