Game Show Ratings Update

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Blog Is Right! For this week’s article, I have decided to keep it short and do a simple review of the Nielsen ratings for some of the game shows this past week.

From the look of these ratings, I think it’s safe to say that Don’t Forget The Lyrics may not make it to a second season and the former FOX primetime hit, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?,  may not make it to a third season. Last week’s fun-filled family edition of Winter Wipeout proved to be a success, showing a whopping 21 percent increase in its ratings.

Even though Wheel lost some of its viewers last week, Wheel of Fortune still topped the syndication ratings charts once more. Before I end this week’s article, I want to bring attention to the fact that the Jeopardy! IBM challenge ratings are not included in this week’s ratings update, but will be featured in next week’s ratings update on TV By The Numbers.

This Week In Game Shows Spotlight: Jeopardy! The IBM Challenge Recap

Ken Jennings "sucking up" to Watson
This past week marked two special events: Valentine’s Day and the Jeopardy! IBM Challenge. This three-day event took place from February 14 until February 16, 2011 at the T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. This ultimate showdown pit IBM’s supercomputer Watson against two Jeopardy! super champs, $2.5 million winner Ken Jennings and $3.2 million winner Brad Rutter. The engineers at IBM decided to try this experiment because they wanted to try something bigger than what they have done before such as IBM’s “Deep Blue” defeating grandmaster chess champion Gary Kasparov in 1997. Because Jeopardy! has clues that often have subtitle meanings, semantics, and riddles within them, this would provide the creators of Watson with the ultimate challenge of programming him with the knowledge to respond to the clues according to how it's worded, something a regular computer may not pick up automatically.  In this week’s article, I am going to break down the highlights of each show.

The Top 5 Dating/Relationship Game Shows

Well folks! It (was) that time of the year again: Valentine's Day! In honor of this holiday, I am going to dedicate this week's article by counting down the top five greatest dating game shows of all time. My definition of a "dating game show" is a game show that involves single male and contestants looking for love or couples answering questions about how well they know each other. Let's get to it!

"Million Dollar Money Drop" First Season Recap

This week’s episode of Million Dollar Money Drop marked the ending of the first season of the new FOX game show. Based on the U.K. hit The Million Pound DropMillion Dollar Money Drop provides some of the same tension, suspense, and difficulty to the contestants on this show as on the U.K. version (with the exception of the increased time lime limits on the last four questions in each game). Although this show pulled below-par ratings throughout the season, there were still some key highlights from this season of Million Dollar Money Drop that made the show worth watching.
